Pre-insulated tubing: when do you also need active heating?

Separate insulated transport from freeze protection and temperature maintenance before choosing the construction for a steam, gas or liquid line.

Define the job of the line.

Pre-insulated tubing is a transport construction: a process tube, thermal insulation and a protective outer jacket supplied together. Marmon identifies its Series 2200 range for steam, gas and liquid transport, including steam supply and condensate return.

Start by deciding whether the objective is to reduce heat loss, maintain a required fluid temperature or protect a line against freezing. Those objectives are related, but they are not interchangeable. Write down the acceptable outlet conditions as well as the inlet conditions.

Three constructions. Different duties.

Pre-insulation limits heat transfer. Electric or steam tracing introduces a source of heat. The appropriate starting point depends on what the fluid must do along the route.

Ask what happens when flow changes.

A line carrying hot fluid during normal operation may have a very different requirement during a cold start or extended shutdown. Review low flow, intermittent use, isolation and time without flow. Insulation slows heat transfer; it does not generate heat.

If the process depends on staying above a temperature threshold, discuss whether active electric or steam tracing is required. Do not assume that insulation alone will meet a maintained-temperature or freeze-protection duty simply because the fluid normally enters the line warm.

Consider the outer protection and terminations.

The jacket and insulation need to suit the environment along the route. Give PMA the indoor and outdoor conditions, potential exposure to water or chemicals and any constraints at supports, bends or penetrations. The manufacturer describes a continuous polymer jacket for its pre-insulated range; end details still need a considered installation.

Keep tube material, dimensions, wall thickness, pressure and fluid compatibility in the enquiry. Ratings and installation requirements must be confirmed for the actual assembly, rather than inferred from a photograph or the family name.
