Heat-traced tubing enquiry checklist: what to send with your specification

Bring fluid, temperature, dimensions, utilities and installation details together to make a tubing enquiry easier to assess.

Illustrative electric heat-traced tubing samples showing the process tube, red heater and insulation for a specification review
Review the operating duty and installation before confirming the complete tubing assembly.

Describe the fluid and operating duty.

Start with the fluid composition, normal and maximum process pressure and the flow range. State whether the line carries a process fluid, an instrument signal, an analyser sample, steam or condensate. Include compatibility requirements and any known constraints on tube material.

Explain the outcome required: freeze protection, temperature maintenance, viscosity management or insulated transport. If some values are provisional, label them clearly rather than turning an assumption into a design requirement.

The details that shape the assembly.

A clear enquiry identifies what is known, what needs confirming and which operating cases the proposed tubing must cover. A drawing and a concise duty summary are useful starting points.

Separate the temperature cases.

Provide normal inlet temperature, required maintained or outlet temperature and the maximum allowable temperature. Add minimum and maximum ambient conditions, exposure along the route and any cleaning, start-up or shutdown cases.

For electric tracing, include available voltage and the intended sensing and control arrangement. For steam tracing, provide the available steam conditions and condensate return arrangements. If no active heating is proposed, explain the conditions that pre-insulation must accommodate.

Add dimensions, route and documentation.

Specify tube count, outside diameter, wall thickness and required material where these are known. Include overall length, bend and space constraints, supports, terminations and the connection details at each end. A marked route drawing can make interfaces easier to discuss.

List relevant site requirements, area classification where applicable, documentation and inspection needs. Ask for ratings and suitability to be confirmed for the selected assembly. A product-family limit should not be treated as a guarantee for every tubing construction or operating condition.

Use the enquiry to resolve the remaining questions.

You do not need to have every answer before contacting PMA. Send the duty summary, the available drawings and a list of the details still to be confirmed. We can help you organise the product questions and the next steps for a complete specification.

The product brochure provides an overview of electric-traced, steam-traced and pre-insulated tubing. Use it alongside the parameter and application guides, then confirm the exact supplied construction and documentation with PMA.
