Steam-traced tubing: check the supply and condensate route together

A practical enquiry checklist for using saturated steam to maintain process-fluid temperature or viscosity in a tubing bundle.

Describe the process before the utility.

Steam-traced bundles use a tracer tube alongside the process tubing to transfer heat. Marmon describes this construction for maintaining fluid temperature or viscosity with saturated steam. An available steam connection is a useful starting point, but it does not define what the process needs.

Provide the fluid composition, operating pressure, flow range, inlet temperature and required maintained temperature. Identify maximum allowable temperatures and any cleaning conditions separately. A line that needs enough heat to remain workable may also have an upper temperature limit.

The steam tracer is one part of the system. The supply conditions, condensate arrangements, process limits and installation route belong in the same specification.

Record actual supply conditions.

Include the available steam pressure and temperature, whether the supply is continuous and how it changes during start-up or shutdown. Make clear whether the quoted conditions are available at the proposed connection or are general plant-header values.

Ask the responsible site engineer to review the steam control and condensate arrangements. Describe the return destination, route, elevation changes and any constraints. The tubing enquiry should fit the site utility design rather than leave those details to be resolved after the bundle is ordered.

Bring the route into the enquiry.

Supply a route length or drawing with bends, supports, transitions and termination locations. Note outdoor exposure, access restrictions and requirements for inspection or maintenance. Check installation requirements against the selected construction rather than assuming every bundle has the same bend or support limits.

PMA can help assemble the product questions and documentation required for the proposed tubing. Final steam-system design, installation and operating procedures should be reviewed by the appropriately qualified people responsible for the plant.
