What is inside a pre-insulated tubing bundle?
Start with the tube that contains the fluid. Its material and dimensions must suit the process conditions and the connections at either end. The insulation surrounds that tube, while the outer jacket protects the insulated assembly along its route.
When reviewing a quotation, distinguish the process tube outside diameter from the finished bundle diameter. The first affects tube connections; the second affects the space needed for supports, bends and entry points. Neither dimension alone tells you the pressure rating of the complete line.
Where is pre-insulated tubing used?
Marmon identifies Dekoron Unitherm Series 2200 for steam, gas and liquid transport. Its stated uses include connections from steam supply manifolds to pipe or vessel tracing, and condensate return. These are transport duties: the fluid is carried inside the insulated tube.
That distinction matters when describing a project. A line carrying steam to a user is different from a steam tracer heating a separate process tube. Tell PMA what travels inside each tube, where it comes from and what condition it must reach at the outlet.
Is pre-insulated tubing the same as heat-traced tubing?
The terms describe different parts of a construction. Pre-insulation describes insulation fitted before the assembly reaches site. Heat tracing describes a heat source running along the line. A factory-built electric- or steam-traced bundle can also arrive pre-insulated.
Within this range, the untraced pre-insulated family is the starting point for insulated transport. If the duty calls for added heat, review the electrically traced or steam-traced families instead. Ask for the complete assembly description rather than relying on the word “insulated”.
Will insulation alone prevent freezing?
Insulation slows cooling; it does not create heat. A line with no flow can continue to lose heat during a prolonged cold period. Assess the coldest ambient conditions, the fluid’s freezing point and the longest expected idle period before deciding whether insulation is sufficient.
A useful enquiry describes both normal operation and shutdown. State whether the line is drained, kept flowing or left full, and whether a utility supply remains available. This makes it possible to review freeze protection around the actual operating sequence.
How do you specify pre-insulated tubing?
Bring the fluid, pressure and temperature requirements together with the route. Include the minimum acceptable outlet condition, installed length, connection details and any environmental exposure. Provide the process tube requirements separately from the available installation space.
PMA supplies Dekoron Unitherm tubing in the UK and can help bring these details into an enquiry. Request the drawing, datasheet and installation instructions for the proposed construction, including treatment of exposed ends and field connections.
Your questions, answered.
Can pre-insulated tubing carry steam?
The manufacturer identifies Series 2200 for steam transport. The selected tube, connections and complete assembly still need to suit the specified pressure and temperature.
Is pre-insulated tubing the same as district-heating pipe?
This PMA range concerns process and instrument tubing assemblies. A search for pre-insulated pipe may refer to district heating, buried water services or building systems with different dimensions and construction requirements.
Does the outer jacket replace end sealing?
A protective jacket covers the bundle length. Request the appropriate instructions for exposed ends, transitions and field connections so that the installation treats those interfaces correctly.
